I have tried in the past to explain why art & literature are treasures, and how their correct use is an exercise in humility as well as love of the world.

Tilda Swinton does it perfectly with these few words:

We stand before a work of art and our spirit is lifted by it: amazing that someone is like us! We stand before a work of art and our spirit resists: amazing that someone is different!
