The mother run

The last ski run of the day. You go to the top of the slope and make your way all the way back down to base. Personally, I choose a leisurely run, to end the day with a long, easy ski allowing me to enjoy the view, the breeze and the fact that these planks on my feet allow me to slide down the side of a mountain.

The last ski run of the day.

Bad Song Lyrics, I

This is a song about how female affirmation is nothing on its won but rather requires two very important things:

1) Male approval
2) Dismissal of other women

It is saying: "love yourself primarily because men love you, and dismiss women who are not like you because the female gender is one best judged on looks".

"Yeah, my momma she told me don't worry about your size
She says, boys they like a little more booty to hold at night
You know I won't be no stick-figure, silicone Barbie doll,
So, if that's what's you're into
Then go ahead and move along"

Disagreeing to Agree

I am confused by the controversy over the Newsweek cover (below). Many are complaining that it is dehumanising and sexist.

The article is about the Tech industry being dehumanising and sexist.

Hence the image.

So if the cover image makes you angry, then you are agreeing with the article.

What am I missing?

Art

I have tried in the past to explain why art & literature are treasures, and how their correct use is an exercise in humility as well as love of the world.

Tilda Swinton does it perfectly with these few words:

We stand before a work of art and our spirit is lifted by it: amazing that someone is like us! We stand before a work of art and our spirit resists: amazing that someone is different!

Kids these days

Are impressive over achievers with diverse skills, book smarts, street smarts, awards and reams of volunteer work to their name. Also, apparently it is now the done thing for math and science high school students to apply to liberal arts colleges. BRAVI. Correct choice.

Interviewing applicants for my alma mater is one of the most feel-good activities I can imagine. Speaking with bright, ambitious and charming leaders of the future will make you feel good about the world. We are doing things well, mi gente.

Update on Grannys at the Grammys

Kanye wins the internet. By accident.

This rant is real.

Yes, Kanye West ACTUALLY said that Beck should have given his award to Beyoncé because, apparently, he does not "deliver monumental feats of music" and thus recognising him is "disrespectful to inspiration". Yes: Beck has no inspiration.

And that's just warming up.

Kanye then explains the deep, strong, committed role of the musician in today's world: "We as musicians have to inspire people who go to work every day".

Boom. He said it.

Watch the video and look at Kim's face: how much crazy must you to be talking to make Kim Kardashian pull an "uh oh" face?!

Thank you Kanye for the laughs.

Grannys and the Grammys

H/T Arwen.

And no, I don't mean Madonna.

So refreshing to see Beck up there. All these loud artists wearing too many accessories and pride, and then there goes Beck, a 20+ year career with 16 Grammy nominations, and when he gets on stage to accept his award he looks like a teenage there for the first time. I mean, yes in part it's just skinny little old him. Add to that the trembling, mumbling and how does this guy with the great music stay so simple?
